How it works

From phone call to results in four steps

Self-directed labs let you check on your health on your own terms. You choose the tests, you pay a clear price up front, and the results are yours.

  1. Call to book

Call either clinic to set up your lab appointment. Tell us which tests you want.

  2. Get ready

Getting a lipid panel, insulin or a metabolic panel (CMP or BMP)? Fast for 8 to 12 hours before your draw. Most other tests don't need it. Bring a photo ID.

  3. Come in

Check in at the front desk and say you're here for self-directed labs. First lab visit with us? You'll fill out a short consent form at check-in. Pay for your tests at the visit.

  4. Get your results

Most results are ready in 1 to 3 days, and a few take up to a week. We send them by email or mail. Share them with your healthcare provider.

  • Bring a photo ID to every lab visit.

Your results

Most results are ready in 1 to 3 days. A few tests take up to a week. Results go to you by email (fastest) or mail. Our providers don't review self-directed labs, so please follow up with your own healthcare provider about what they mean.

Questions we hear a lot

Do I need a doctor's order?

No. You choose your own tests. That's the whole idea of self-directed labs.

Will my insurance cover it?

We don't bill insurance for these tests. You pay our cash price at your visit, which is often less than what you'd pay through insurance.

Do I have to fast?

Only some tests need it. Fast for 8 to 12 hours if your tests include a lipid panel (cholesterol), insulin or a metabolic panel (CMP or BMP). Most other tests, including urine tests, don't need fasting. If you're not sure, ask when you call to book.

Why is there a $45 fee?

It covers collecting your sample, whether that's a blood draw or a urine sample, and sending it to the lab. Every lab visit has the fee, including visits for urine tests only. You pay it once per visit, so it's best to get all the tests you want at the same time.

How long do results take?

Most results are ready in 1 to 3 days. A few tests take up to a week. We send them by email or mail, and email is the fastest way to get them.

Will someone call me about my results?

No. Your results come straight to you, and our providers don't review them. Share them with your own provider, or book a one-time visit with us for $150 to go over them.

Can I go to either clinic?

Yes. Barron and Roberts both offer self-directed labs with the same tests and prices. Book with whichever clinic is closer.
